[Jujutsu Kaisen] Gojo Satoru is a descendant of Sugawara no Michizane! The dangerous relationship between Japan's three great vengeful spirits and sorcerers

Hello! I'm Osamu, a manga blogger.

Today we will be discussing the deep swamp of Jujutsu Kaisen, getting to the heart of it all!

As the title suggests, this setting has become common knowledge among fans: **"Gojo Satoru is a descendant of Sugawara no Michizane!"**

Do you know how "bad" this is?

It's not just that he comes from a noble family. It's a spine-chilling story that tells the story of how the roots of the most powerful sorcerer lie in the strongest curse in Japanese history!

Today, with my favorite books "Magic Dictionary" and "200 Best Shrines in Japan" in hand, I would like to talk in depth about the "dangerous relationship between Japan's three most vengeful spirits and sorcerers"!

First of all, who is Sugawara no Michizane?

First, let's review Gojo Sensei's ancestor, Sugawara no Michizane.

He was an extremely elite scholar and politician during the Heian period, but due to a conspiracy by his political opponents (Fujiwara no Tokihira's slander), he was demoted to the distant Dazaifu for an innocent crime.

He died there in despair, his longing for the capital still growing.

This is where the main topic begins.

After Michizane's death, the capital was hit by a succession of terrible disasters, including epidemics, droughts, and a lightning strike on the Imperial Palace's Seiryoden. People feared these disasters as the curse of Michizane's vengeful spirit.

To calm this powerful curse, people enshrined Michizane's vengeful spirit as a god. This is how he came to be called "Tenjin-sama" and the origins of Kitano Tenmangu Shrine in Kyoto and Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine in Fukuoka.

Yes, Sugawara no Michizane is a symbol of Japan's most representative "curse," who was enshrined as a god because human "negative emotions (resentment)" were so powerful .

Japan's Three Great Vengeful Spirits and Sorcerers

And it is Sugawara no Michizane who is counted as one of the " Three Great Vengeful Spirits of Japan ."

According to "Japan's 200 Best Shrines," the three major vengeful spirits are as follows:

  1. Sugawara no Michizane

  2. Taira no Masakado

  3. Retired Emperor Sutoku

It is worth noting that Taira no Masakado also rebelled against the Imperial Court and was defeated, but his vengeful spirit is feared and is enshrined as a god at Kanda Shrine in Tokyo and other places.

The strongest sorcerer = descendant of the strongest vengeful spirit

This is the most "dangerous" setting of "Jujutsu Kaisen."

  • Gojo Satoru : The strongest sorcerer of the modern era. The head of the Gojo family, one of the three great families, who inherited the "Unlimited Curse" and "Six Eyes."

  • Sugawara no Michizane: Ancestor of the Gojo family. One of the most powerful vengeful spirits (curses) in Japan.

In other words, the strongest sorcerers are born from the bloodline of the strongest ``curse . ''

What does this mean?

In the world of Jujutsu Kaisen, cursed energy is born from negative human emotions. Michizane's grudge was a powerful energy (cursed energy) that plunged the entire country into fear.

Could it be that the Gojo family's incredible magical power and the inherited technique known as "Infinite Curse" that controls it have their roots in this "power of curse" that is unprecedented in Japanese history?

Ironically, a family of sorcerers who exorcise powerful curses are descended from the perpetrator of Japan's most feared curse (an evil spirit).

Sorcery and curses are two sides of the same coin.

Osamu believes that it is this profound setting that gives the world of Jujutsu Kaisen its overwhelming realism and depth!

It's not just vengeful spirits! The real-life roots of Jujutsu Kaisen

By the way, there are other roots of this "magic."

  • Abe no Seimei

He is Japan's most famous sorcerer (Onmyoji), and his name is even mentioned in the Magic Dictionary. He is said to have used Shikigami (familiar spirits). This is the origin of the Shikigami used in Megumi Fushiguro's Ten Shadows Technique!

  • Ryoumen Sukuna

And then there's Sukuna, the King of Curses. According to the Dictionary of Oriental Divine Names, he is actually a legendary being who appears in the Nihon Shoki. He is said to have had two faces and four limbs on one body, and was defeated as a "rebellious god" who refused to obey the imperial court, but he was also an object of worship in the local area.

"Jujutsu Kaisen" brilliantly elevates the "dark" aspects of the history, mythology, and beliefs of the Japan we live in into entertainment.

When you learn that Gojo Satoru is not just a cheating character, but a descendant of the bloodline that carries the terrifying grudge of Sugawara no Michizane, doesn't his strength take on a different weight?

It was Osamu!
