The Beauty of the Mundane: Why Frieren Chases "Useless" Magic

Hi, I'm Misaki.

There is a certain atmosphere to Frieren—a sense of peace tinged with a lingering loneliness—as she wanders the world searching for magic that is utterly useless in battle. Every so often, I find myself thinking about those "useless" spells she has worked so hard to collect.

In a fantasy world dominated by overwhelming power, she seeks out the trivial: spells to make flowers bloom or to clean a stain from a garment. For a mage, strength is usually everything. So why does she find such profound meaning in these small, inconsequential things?

Preserving Small Moments of Happiness

Early in her journey, we see spells that seem entirely meaningless. A spell to make grapes sweeter, or one to make flowers look just a little more beautiful. These possess no power to defeat demons or protect a life.

If magic were merely a weapon, there would be no reason for her to spend so much time gathering them. But for Frieren, magic isn't about combat. It is a way to hold onto the fleeting, precious glimmers of everyday life.

She could have pursued efficiency and raw power. Instead, she seeks magic that preserves the stillness after a battle and the warmth of a passing moment. It is less about accumulating tools and more about gathering the landscapes she wishes to cherish. I love this approach—the way her collection feels like a quiet, gentle prayer. The true value of magic lies not in its strength, but in the kindness it allows us to feel.

Following the Footsteps of Himmel

The story begins with Himmel’s funeral. I can still vividly remember the tears Frieren shed in that moment, where time seemed to stand still. It was the agonizing realization of how little she had truly tried to know him.

Her journey is, in many ways, a pilgrimage through the footsteps he left behind. From the statues of him in various towns to the small acts of kindness he once performed, every memory drives her toward a new destination in search of more magic.

The "useless" magic she collects are the very fragments of the ordinary life Himmel loved. The brilliance of the sky they shared, the color of a wildflower by the road—perhaps collecting these spells is her way of physically reclaiming the short but irreplaceable time they spent together.

Every time she finds a new spell, the memories of him are woven back together, bit by bit. Watching her, I feel a sense of solace. Magic, in her hands, becomes a guide to reconnect with those we have lost.

Magic as a Bridge Between Hearts

Her relationship with Fern also evolves through magic. While they are master and apprentice, there is a warmth between them, like a family supporting one another through the rhythms of daily life.

Beyond the sharp, destructive magic used in combat, their journey is filled with magic that colors their existence—a spice that makes a harsh journey just a little softer and a little more joyful.

Magic has often been portrayed as a terrifying force used to slay demons. But in Frieren’s path, magic serves as a "window into the human heart." Even the smallest, most useless spell can bring a smile to someone's face or allow us to touch their kindness.

Perhaps the real reason she continues her collection isn't to win battles, but to etch the "evidence of human existence"—beautiful, poignant, and warm—into her own heart.

Magic has a wondrous power to pull distant memories into the present.
