The Calculated Shield: Re-evalfraying Maomao’s Survival Strategy through Xiaolan’s Eyes
Hey everyone, Osamanga here!
While reading the spin-off, *The Apothecary Diaries: Xiaolan's Recollections*, I found myself pausing in deep thought. Seeing Maomao through the eyes of her friend, Xiaolan, paints a strikingly different picture of the character we thought we knew.
I kept coming back to that early scene where Maomao tests toxins on her own arm, watching the reaction with an almost ecstatic glow. While everyone else is recoiling in horror, her eyes are sparkling with fascination. Through Xiaolan’s perspective, we begin to see the chillingly calculated nature hidden behind Maomao's "indifferent" attitude.
Turning Isolation into an Information Network
There is a scene early on where Maomao is deeply engrossed in her poison experiments in the apothecary garden. She conducts these life-threatening experiments with the same casual detachment one might use while eating a snack, seemingly unbothered by the danger.
What’s fascinating is that she isn't trying to show off. In fact, she goes to great lengths to remain as inconspicuous as possible.
I truly believe this is a calculated move. In the Rear Palace—a place where a single wrong step can cost you your life—being noticed is your greatest liability. Her "indifference" and her "act of incompetence" are tools used to lower the guard of those around her, making her appear "harmless."
By letting others believe, "She’s just an apothecary who doesn't care about anything," she actually widens her net of information. By choosing solitude and avoiding deep entanglements, she is able to gather rumors and intel on poisons more quickly and accurately than anyone else. In essence, her isolation serves as a "cloak of invisibility" for her intelligence gathering.
The True Nature of Maomao’s "Wall"
Through Xiaolan’s eyes, the "wall" Maomao builds around herself becomes much more vivid. Even as a close friend, Xiaolan occasionally catches a glimpse of a cold, piercing light in Maomao’s eyes—a look that suggests she isn't looking at a "person," but rather a "specimen" to be studied.
When she is piecing together a mystery through logical deduction, her gaze becomes incredibly sharp. At those moments, it feels as though even a friend like Xiaolan is nothing more than a puzzle piece to be analyzed. There is a profound emotional distance there.
But why does she insist on building this wall?
I believe it is her way of protecting her inner self. In the Rear Palace, a den of desire and conspiracy, letting others too close can lead to your own destruction. By detaching her emotions and observing everything from a distance, she uses this "wall" to maintain her sanity and identity amidst the chaos.
That wall isn't just meant to keep others out; it is her primary defense mechanism to ensure she survives intact.
Navigating the Periphery of Palace Intrigue
As the story progresses and the stakes grow higher, Maomao’s position becomes increasingly precarious. As conspiracies of poisoning and hidden identities come to light behind the glittering curtain of the court, Maomao always maintains a strict "boundary."
For instance, when faced with difficult requests from Jinshi, she adopts an incredibly dry, detached stance, essentially saying, "I am merely an apothecary. I know nothing of these matters."
This mastery of "maintaining distance" is truly remarkable.
Despite being in the spotlight of someone as powerful as Jinshi, she refuses to dive headfirst into the political fray. She solves the mysteries, but she does not participate in the power struggles. Her core survival strategy is to remain, quite stubbornly, an observer.
If she were to become too enamored with solving mysteries and began to take sides in political maneuvering, her peace would vanish instantly.
Ultimately, her "indifference" is her sharpest weapon—the very thing that allows her to survive in this turbulent palace while remaining true to herself.
